Autumn sown spuds
« on: July 28, 2011, 21:38 »
Hello all! Hope you are all well, and ready to share your knowledge. I have been reading Johns article about new spuds for Chrimbo and have bought some Charlotte seed pots to give it a go, thing is we have to plant in the same bed our seconds were in so need to feed the soil, our comfrey is very young and small so probs not much use, John reckons fish, blood & bone is quick fix, but do we apply it now ( 3 weeks before planting ) or when we plant Ta Ian 8)

P.S Our 3/4 full dalek has a lot of maggots in, I assume this is not a good thing

Are they actually maggots, as in fly larvae, or are they different wrigglers?

Fly larvae usually feed on animal flesh, and I assume you have none in your compost

Hi sunshine! I'm not sure now, they are quite small(5-10mm) whitish pink and the ant's seem to like carrying them about  will have to check again tomorrow, but no, no meat in the bin :)

They sound like ants' pupae then and no need to worry at all  :D

And you can add FBB either now or when you plant the potatoes as it is a slow release fertiliser  ;)

It was really smelly yesterday, we lifted the bin of and forked the contents back in, it was rotten and moist at the bottom and drier and fresher on top,so now it's upside down, think it might need more brown dry stuff, any ideas Mum?

re compost
its a fine art getting it right - by the sound of it too much greenstuff has been added, lawn mowings are the usual culprit - try adding shredded paper/cardboard in layers.  A bit of earth is a good idea too as it can introduce worms/bugs/funghi etc....  A sprinkle of er... urine(pee) is good too...  I always chuck in a tiny amount of lime as well now and again, dont overdo it!

Now you have mixed it up it should be OK. Just remember to water it from time to time if it seems dry again.

If you have space to start another heap, then you can leave this one alone to do its stuff until it is ready  :)
