Does anyone know if kale can cope with 6" soil depth, or does it need more? The varieties I'm doing are Dwarf Green Curled and Nero di Toscana

Yes.

You might not get the best crops, but both shall cope.

I have grown kale in a 40l plastic trug from Asda and also in a normal bed and there is no comparison. The one in the soil is much bigger. This of course might be a function of reduced nutrients as well as reduced depth of soil but I wont be growing my kale in big pots again.

Well, container gardening has a lot to do with lack of space and often involves a copious amount of feeding and watering.

While some grow amasing things in hardly any soil, one can see a lot of rubbishy crops out in the open, too. It matters a lot, what's in that soil.
