Post by: Lewjam on June 22, 2011, 13:12
Right ok, this is going to sound very daft!

I have ready many times people talking about giving chooks there evening Corn.

Are you refering to Maze or some other grain?

Mine dont seem to like maze as they try to chew it and cant!  Havnt quite worked out you can just swollow it whole yet!

You can buy bags of mixed corn or cut maize.
Ours have smallholders super mix which has lots of different bits in it.
They love it but I try my best to ration it. The beauty with corn apparently is that it takes a while for them to process it, so it keeps them warm and fed overnight.
Mind you if they're broody they have to go without.

It's not a silly question at all.

From Wikipedia:

"Corn is the name used in the United States, Canada, and Australia for the grain maize. In much of the world, the term 'corn' is a generic term for local cereal crops, such as Wheat, Barley, Oats."

I had to look it up when I first started seeing it on this site, because in NZ 'corn' only refers to maize.  If we were referring to other seeds/cereals we would call them 'grain.'

An old Chinese proverb says something along the lines of: He who asks a question is a fool for five minutes; he who does not ask a question remains a fool forever

You could try them with a bit of cracked maize to start, until they are used to the idea.

Mine take a while to get used to any large grains.  I was disappointed when I first gave them whole sunflower seeds as they did the same as yours - they kind of "chewed" them with their beaks but didn't swallow them.  After I broke a few open and let them have the yummy kernel inside they soon got the idea and will now swallow them whole.
