The time taken to knaw through may coincide with them being disturbed by you. Just a thought.

Beech martens could create the size of hole you are seeing, but i don't know if you have them in your area.

I know I have more problems with martens than I do with foxes!

Hopefully whoever it is has given up. Which means I'll never find out who it was. At least the chickens are ok.
