Weevils got my beans!
« on: October 25, 2019, 07:56 »
Ok, I know theyre not technically weevils but theyve hatched in all 3 of my kilner jars of beans, my whole crop from this year... (".)

If I meticulously examine every single bean and remove those with holes, are the others still good to eat?

Also, I've rather been put off growing beans again. There was no sign that my plants had been compromised, is there any way of telling if a plant has been attacked BEFORE spending all that time growing, shelling and drying beans?

Seems to grow anything nowadays you need to fine net it all. Not happy.

Could be brunchid beetle. You should be able to see if a larvae has gone into to bean as they leave a very small hole. These larvae then develop into the beetle inside the bean and create the perfectly round hole to escape out of

The best thing you can do if you suspect you might have weevils in your beans is to freeze them for a few days.  That will kill them off and stop them hatching out.  They will still be in the beans, but won't do you any harm.  Extra protein?

When they are growing you can normally spot an infestation by the notched leaves where the adults chew the leaves.  I find that only my broad beans are affected, I have never had a problem with French beans or peas.
