Could anyone identify my model and motor? Please
« on: February 24, 2013, 13:23 »
I have just bought a merry tiller and would like to know which model it is, more importantly the Briggs and Stratton 3.5hp motor is missing a spring or linkage on the throttle and I cannot find a serial number to identify it by.
The previous owner has given it a coat of hamerite so if there were numbers on it they've been well covered now.
It does run with a bit of effort but could do with a proper over haul - such as a proper air filter instead of the current kitchen pan scrubber.

Billy Hi,

I can't help on the tiller itself, but the engine looks like a 80232 B&S. They used to stamp the engine number somewhere on the main cowling, you could wire brush this and possibly confirm the engine number. There is a copy of the engine owners manual in the instruction books section, model 80200 series. If you can confirm this I can email you a copy of the parts manual in .pdf - at 660 kb it is too big to post here. Use this to compare what 'modifications' previous owner have made.

The governor spring is missing. I’ve copied and altered your photo to show where it goes. The part number is 260041. Your engine is a replacement as Wolseley stopped making your model Major in 1978 and that engine was made on 6th February 1980. Note that it is a 3hp, the 3.5hp side valve engine is quite a bit different.
