Had to go to the vets
« on: September 29, 2010, 18:38 »
I had to take Kate to the vets yesterday becase she has got a respiratory infection and she was so good and went around to say hello to everyone. We came home with antibiotics to give everyone in their water. Can anyone answer a problem since i have been putting  it in the water they wont drink it and is drinking water from the puddles  ::)(we have got a lot here) But how can i make them drink the water with the antibiotic in. I hope someone will be along to give me some ideas.

I had the exact same problem with Monty. The antibiotic was yellow in colour, so it coloured the water. He knew there was something in it and wouldnt touch it. I had no alternative, but to make his special treat, porridge with grated apple, and mix the powder in it. Maybe you could ring your vets and ask what a safe dose to give in food may be. My vet wasnt keen on me doing it, but it was the only way to make sure he got it, and to make sure he drank some water!
At least it sounds like you have to dose all your chooks, Ive had to bring Monty indoors so that the others dont have the medicine.

Good Luck!!!

You could use a syringe ensuring each hen was given an amount at regular intervals. I would however check with your vet as to what quantity should be given and at what intervals.

This is OK as long as you haven't got a few hundred hens!

Could you keep them in their run so that the dosed water is the only water they can find ?
