Should I take her to the vets?
« on: November 09, 2012, 09:05 »
I now have another ill chook...this one has a very hard crop even first thing in the morning.  I don't think it's sour crop as there's no smell, but she's very skinny and this morning her comb was tinged slightly blue.
Does anyone have any advice?

if her crop is still full then it sounds like she has an impacted crop.
Take a look here to see how to treat it.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Thanks Joyfull, sadly she was put down by the vet yesterday as she deteriorated very fast.  He did  PM and I was devastated to find it could have been my fault.  I've been using a hemp based sawdust like substance in the nest box for a  few months and she'd eaten so much of this it had created a blockage.  I now have 2 other bids I'm seriously worried about.
I'm going to buy different bedding today and have them on a mushy diet with cod-liver oil in it.

try dust extracted shavings for their bedding. I always use hemcore or rapport for bedding and never had a problem (used it for a few years now) - yours must have just liked the taste of it.
