Title: Weighted gravity gate closer.
Post by: Roughlee Handled on June 13, 2009, 09:39
I am trying to find plans of a weighted gravity gate closer. All the gates round here a sprung.
Why weighted? Well if it is weighted I could take the weight off and leave the gate open.  Something you can not do with a sprung gate.  I do not want to make a mess of me gate experimenting.

Any proven ideas?

As a guess, i would say a bit of rope/string/chain fixed to the gate post, looping down and the other end fixed to the gate.
Put a wieght in the middle of the rope and there you have it.
The further along the gate from the hinges that the string is attached should mean the less wieght you need.

Tried it before I posted. Thanks. I dose not work on my gate as it opens to a 90 degree angle and the string and weight jam on the wood.  I gets a bit messy.

Stuart,
Just a thought, but isn't there anywhere to attach a hook & eye to hold your gate open if you used the spring?  ??? :)
