The local garden centre says ...
« on: October 27, 2010, 08:49 »
... that the standard of their garlic supplies has been a bit hit and miss this year and last year (some of it is on the borderline of rotting/rotten) and that elephant garlic is hard to come by for autumn planting.

Comments? Does this relate to anyone else's experience in buying this year?

At least they are honest and do not put it on sale.

Plenty of good garlic around here. Try another garden centre or go on line.

I had no problem getting decent garlic online.

Bought mine at the Pound shop. Went to our allotment shop they didn't have any garlic or early onions. The shop is now closed for winter!!!

I've ordered mine through my allotment shop along with my seeds, but haven't seen any as yet.  I'm not too bothered because I give myself until end of December to get garlic in, and I'm still ploughing through my garlic from this year's harvest anyway :D

I can recommend http://www.reallygarlicky.co.uk/garlic their garlic has really big cloves which are easier to peel. I found that I often ended up with small cloves which were a pain to then peel. The only downside is you dont get many to a bulb so might need more bulbs to fill your row.

I bought a pack containing one garlic bulb a few weeks ago and had to take it back for a replacement - it was mushy and rotten on the inside.

I have always managed to buy good garlic bulbs from Dobies.
If I can grow things in Shetland, then you can certainly grow things where you are!

Mixed messages then. Some allotment societies not supplying. A lot of good on-line. But if I live within walking distance of a garden centre, my logic is that I shouldn't have to go chasing round on-line and have to pay postage. As well as waiting in for delivery. Well not for common things like garlic anyway.

Chritine - I agree. Support your local shop or loose them, trouble is I could only get elephant garlic here, tried three local centres in the end I have to go to Dobies. But theirs came fast and was good qual.

I went to my preferred local shop on a Monday @ the beginning of October and they had sold out over the weekend!  I thought I was early!     The GC had the remains of a basket of bulbs, most of which weren't thrilling.  I bought one and reluctantly used home grown for the rest of the row.  No more now, not even for ready money.  ;)  Reluctant to use my home grown because they weren't great this year - but I hope that is just cos they didnt get enough rain in May.

i've seen some really mixed stuff from the garden centres in the last couple of years. I was at  bit of a loss as to where to go to get it for this year, but the allotment shop came through with some cracking looking bulbs early in october.
