What sort of netting do you use?
« on: June 22, 2014, 07:48 »
Hi, we have wood pigeons on our site (and butterflies!  :) ) so the lettuce and brassicas need to be netted.  I've bought some 'Agralan M160 Standard Butterfly and Bird Netting' from Amazon but this is not cheap.  It's also 4 metres by 3 metres which is a bit awkward as my plot is 5 metres wide so some joining together is necessary.

I've asked around the site about cheap(er) netting and I've asked people what netting they use, but all I've got so far is vague references to how they go to the poundshop for theirs.  But the netting on sale there is very small and the mesh size is big enough to get a bus through, never mind a Cabbage White.

Has anyone out there sourced cheap(er) netting, preferably larger than 4 x 3 metres?

This is my 'treat of the year' for the plot. It should last a very long time!! They also sell larger sizes too.

Hope that helps  :D

Debris netting-available from loads of places. I bought mine a few years ago from here:

on recommendation of this forum. It's still going strong!

We also use debris netting, used the same firm as PPL above but bought through their "Bay of Evil" site (can't find the link at the minute  :()

I agree, debris netting seems to the job just fine, and you can cut the lengths to suit the size of your plot. It's worth the investment because it lasts for ages. When I started with my plot I couldn't afford to get everything I needed at once, so I invested in one item each year. The other netting that I found to be worth the money was the soft 'bird netting' that I use to protect my peas and strawberries. It's much easier to use than the plastic type, can be bought in various widths by the metre, so you can get exactly what you need, and like the debris netting, it's easily rolled up for storage - unlike plastic netting which always seems to get in a tangle that used to take me ages to sort out.
