I'm sorry to disagree with Munty, but I was under the impression that lichen was a sign of health, it only grows where the air is clean, and does the host no harm! But I could be wrong!

All my young apple trees, as a matter of fact all the trees around here have it and nothing seems to be suffering.

Just my 2p worth.

as for harm to the tree ,not sure if its doing any but it wont do no harm to brush it off
