General Question about growlights
« on: October 04, 2010, 12:57 »
I've been thinking about htis singe reading the post on growlights for onions  but my question is a much wider one. What is the effect of growlights and how much of a n advantage would they give you growing tomatoes and peppers which will be transferred to a warm green house/ I had toyed with the dea of using an old aquarium amd lighting unit as a diy option . Any opinions anyone ?

Thanks

I can only base my thoughts on growing aquarium plants (under water, of course!)

The amount of light required and the correct colour balance tubes would make it an expensive undertaking (a single T8 tube is not enough), and of course space and height restrictions would mean you couldn't raise many plants, or grow them very tall, and in my experience in the right natural conditions (indoors in my case until I got my greenhouse) they grow like you-know-what off a stick anyway!

If you don't mind the expense and really do have a warm greenhouse then I suppose it would be a potential way to get really early toms though!  :)

Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

I use 4 * 25W CFL's and an 4' Growlux to spark off my plants early, mainly chillis. Works well enough to keep them alive until it's warm enough to slap them in a greenhouse.

question
