Big Drippa automatic watering system
« on: May 22, 2014, 21:57 »
I bought two of these when they were on offer thinking that they'd be good to water my tomatoes in the greenhouse whilst I'm at work all day. So far I've found them fiddly and getting the flow right is near impossible.  I'm going through a bag of water in an afternoon.  Maybe I haven’t fiddled enough yet but how does anyone else find them? Useful or waste of time?
Thanks
OG

My system is connected to a water butt and that empties in a 2 or 3 of days - so can't see that the small bags on your system would last very long.

Perhaps you could modify your system to run from a tank/larger container at least?

I've also connected mine to a water butt. The problem I find is that during the season the drippers get bunged up and I have to unthread the system from between the tomatoes so that I can clean the nozzles.

Thanks for your replies.  I'm going to try the water butt instead which solves another problem for me. The bag just wasn't hanging properly and I ended up hanging it from some twine. The twine won't take the weight of the bag when totally full. So, water butt it is. Thanks.
One final query please.  Do you just place the dripper nozzles at the base of the plant and leave them? Feels like they should be pegged down or secured somehow.

Weren't there any pegs with the kit?

I peg it down but with the drippers just off the soil if possible in an attempt to stop them bunging up (it fails). :)

No pegs in either kit. Guess I'll have to find some  :(

Now I've got the water butt but can't work out how to connect the hose to the tap. It kinda fits but its not a tight fit. How have you managed yours?

Thanks

You can buy inline filters for the main hose. They will stop gunk getting to the drippers and bunging them up.
The filter can be removed and cleaned under a tap/ in a bucket once every couple of months!

Doesn't work for me. They still get bunged up despite an inline filter.
