Hand held tools
« on: November 18, 2013, 09:07 »
Raised plot. I have a small plot that I intend to use as a veg patch. The height of it is suitable for me standing at the side and I can reach all parts without having to bend down. I would like to use tools suitable for hand use. Can anyone tell me if there are any hand held rakes about. Am thinking that it might be an idea to get a normal rake and cut down the handle to about 12 ins.

Look forward to any advice
Cheers

If you're only looking for a short-handled rake that's probably the cheapest way of going about it - if you want other tools too have a look at the Wolf range of interchangeable tools - you would obviously need the shorter handle in your case (mine is more than the foot long you mention, but I'm not going up the garden to the shed to find out exactly how much longer just now!   ;))
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

With the rake, I'd be concerned that you might end up with an implement that was 'top-heavy', i.e. quite wide and heavy at the business end, and not properly counterbalanced by the length of the handle, if the handle is only 12" long.  This is likely to cause muscle ache in the arm with use. Something to bear in mind if adapting as suggested.

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Less leverage so less stress, pound shops often do rake heads which are okay for light single handed use.

Hi
just read your post, I wondered if you might find a decent childrens/junior rake any use as they are shorter in the handle but not as wide at the 'head' so shouldn't be too top heavy.  We have one at school which is still good quality but fairly lightweight, not sure of the make as it's been around ages, and certainly before I took over the gardening.
Good luck

I've got an ordinary old garden rake with a two ft handle and also I cut about 3" off each end of the tined head, so there are just a few left!

It's very light, and manoeuvrable.
