Netting for fruit cage
« on: August 17, 2013, 19:26 »
Just after some buying tips for fruit cage netting.
There is a lot to choose from with various trade names which mean nothing to me.
I will be buying a piece something like 8mx10m (~26ft x 33ft)
There is some called Nortene on EBay for £22.99. The mesh is 25mm
Any opinions would be welcome and alternative suggestions.
Don't mind buying good stuff if it lasts.
Thanks
C

well you had a reply referring to butterfly netting, posted by mistake, so I removed it.

Best give it a while as there aren't many members on-line at the moment, and I wouldn't know what to suggest.

There are lots of nets on Ebay, as you rightly say, but beware the cheaper stuff, as it is very thin, and doesn't last that long - say three seasons max. It'll tear with weeds getting caught up with it too.

We decided to bite the bullet and bought some from a good garden centre, Notcutts, and they sell a black netting in 4m widths, and this is much more robust, and easier to spread as well! It was much more expensive, but it has a lot going for it.

It might be an idea to go and see some first.

I have no idea about exotic things like fruit bushes having only just sown my first radishes, but places like homebase (and probably b&q but I haven't checked) sell netting by the meter so you could check them out, have a feel and get an idea of gauge, then shop around for price. It's hard buying something's online because its hard to really picture what your getting.

I would use metal netting for the lower part of the sides as it will stop rabbits making holes in it .
I cook therefore I grow

I have not long bought this for my fruit cage and got 20m x 3m. Very reasonable price and seems good quality - it needed sharp scissors to cutit! It is all attached to my fruit cage now anyway!

Like Growster, we went to the shop to actually look at netting for our fruit cage and decided the high cost was worth it for sheer durability and life. I have some cheap netting on the blueberry cages and the robins constantly attack it trying to get in. If it lasts 3 years I'll be amazed. The main cage netting is quite heavy, needs 3 people to spread it and will discourage anything. All around the base we have 2 ft high poultry netting to discourage rabbits from chewing through and causing more problems (and expense). The 2 ft mesh we got on sale as we needed 5 rolls (fairly large cage).
