Is this an actual fruitcake or just a sort of white cake with icing?

Normally on fruitcakes marzipan is used as long term icing. Royal icings usually have some sort of egg white and if this is what you used, perhaps it's started to break down and possibly started spoiling.

d you leave the royal icing to dry out? I've never tried fondant figures over royal before but if you tried fondant bits on butter icing the fondant would go soft so I'm thinking there was too much moisture in the royal. Can you remove the decoration and leave the royal icing to dry out, then maybe make the fondant decs and leave them to dry separately and construct the cake nearer the big day?

I would always use royal icing for Christmas cake but I marzipan the cake, leave for 24 hours for the marzipan to dry out then ice and leave for 24 hours for the royal icing to dry out, then decorate( but I usually decorate with plastic tat having no artistic streak).

well the good news is that ive move the cake and its stopped bein shiny , I did marzipan it first , not the supermarket stuff that looks like plastic I get mne from the weigh in shop in chunks its much nicer , I used the royal icing that you had to add water to and found it very good .
I think the room I had it in was too cold and when it came into a warmer one it went shiney luckily no colours bled fewwwwwwwwwww
