Getting Hens and Chicks back into the coup
« on: June 23, 2010, 23:25 »
Hi

My two hens take their chicks out of the coup in the morning,  but in the evening the hens just sit in the run with the chicks under their bodies.  How do I get the hens to go into the coup at night so the chicks will follow?  I have been picking up the hens, which get annoyed and then picking up the chicks and putting them in the coup, but the chicks are getting anxious, which is what I dont want.  Any suggestions.  many thanks

Have you checked the coop for unwanted nasties?

It is unusual for a hen to stay outside once it gets dark.

How old are the chicks?  When my chick was very young I just used to lift Rosie (mum) into the coop and the chick would follow of it's own accord.  Now the chick is much more independent (at 3 weeks) and will often go to bed first then mum follows.

I hung a torch just inside the door of the coup before it started to get dark after a couple of nights they put themselves to bed. It looked like a group of women sat in the front room having a natter with the light on, but they were cozy and later on i just turned the torch off. Now they go to bed without the light on. ::)

The chicks are 5 days old, but when I put one hen in, I have to close the door as she just comes back out.  Its just a bit awkward trying to open the coup door with one hand whilst holding the 2nd hen with the other.  (If you know what I mean).  I cleaned the coup out 6 days ago but will give it another clean, its just about due for one anyhow.   I will also try hanging a tourch in the coup.  Will let you know how it goes.  many thanks

You can try putting the chicks in first.  Mums will follow.
