Blueberries
« on: June 08, 2012, 21:22 »
Talk to me about blueberries please.

I've seen a good (I think!) deal on 3 1ltr pots that should do me early, mid and late season.  I know about the compost I can't pronounce, but really, what are they like to grow?  Will they be happy all the way up here?  What's the harvest like?  Pests? Hardy?

I know a lot will depend on type, but this hasn't been specified on the website.

I would not be without our blueberries.

3 are in large pots at home and six in the ground at the plot, where I try hard to keep the soil acidic enough

Easy to keep, no real pruning, feed with azalea food as well as potash. Net the bushes so the blackbirds don't eat the berries

Hardy as they come  :D

Am I allowed to post a link to the deal?  You can hopefully tell me if it is a good deal or not

It's £5 postage on top.

Our Wilkos don't have them unfortunately - they don't really do any edible plants

If you look at the plant dispatch it has a 3 group listing for Duke/Sunshine Blue/Brigatta Blue - so I'm guessing that this is the same thing

Really?  I thought they all had plants in. Our two branches  both do.  I think mine was £2.99

They sound like a good mix, but work out at over £7 each.

In 1l pots they should be a size to fruit next year (maybe this if you are lucky) whereas the smaller ones from Wilko might take a season longer.

I bought some very cheaply from Aldi two years ago and they were quite small, but are now about 30cm tall, and should start to fruit next year.

I would have a look around on ebay first to see what nurseries are offering before you order, just as a price comparison.

Nah, they have a couple of racks outside that I've managed to find some mangled lettuce plugs on that were over priced and underwatered and that's been it.  Same every year.  Great for seeds and planters though

I did have a look on ebay the other day when I first found the offer and I could find some in 3 lt pots, similar offer, 3 for the full covering of season.

I've never seen them in the local garden centre, but maybe I'll see if hubby wants to take me and hte girls out to a different one this weekend for lunch

I've had them sat in my basket for a few days and I just can't decide whether to buy them.  Me and the girls love them though and I figured that just 10 supermarket packs full and they've paid for themselves as they're so expensive and about £2 a go

If you look at it like that then I  suppose they are worth it!

I have to say that they make great garden plants as they have gorgeous red leaves in the autumn, as wll as pretty bell shaped pink and white flowers.

That's one of the reasons I keep the three at home  :D

When they start fruiting, do you get a lot like in the picture on the link?

No, not for a few years really

My big plants are now five years old and fruit like the pictures, but the younger plants have just one or two clusters of berries per plant (or none in the case of the youngest)

They don't all ripen at once, so they don't look like a big cluster of blue unless you leave them until they are all ripe, in which case some are past it!

Some are blue, some pinkish and some white all at the same time in the cluster
