Manure with wood shavings
« on: May 12, 2008, 08:05 »
I have been offered an endless free supply of manure from a local stables.  However, the horses are bedded down on wood shavings rather than straw.  Does this matter as far as using the manure on the allotment is concerned?  I imagine it wouldn't make much difference in the long term but would it have to rot down for longer?

I was given 6 bin bags of the stuff and it is rotting down in a quiet and forgotton corner of the plot.  I think it does just take longer, I am planning to leave mine at least two years before using it.

I've used it extensively.  Best at least a full year old, but wonderful stuff for tomatoes.

I am currently carting loads of it into my polytunnel!
