Blue Tits Died ?
« on: May 30, 2020, 14:28 »
I am sure the babies in the nesting box must have died.   The parent birds have gone.  Could the babies have died because of the extreme heat that must have been building up in the box ?  It is in the sun all day.  I am asking this question for my sad neighbours.     Mrs Bouquet
Birds in cages do not sing  -  They are crying.

Good afternoon mrs bouquet, it certainly seems that way going by what you have written.  My 'birdy book' which has lots of plans for different types of nesting boxes brings up this very subject.  Our main box is only marine ply so I prop open the top just a smidge while still holding it down with a bungee cord.

I also have a new bird box made from a tree trunk of 18" tall by about 14" diam' it hasn't been snapped up yet but the thick wood walls tend to even out the temperature and stop it getting too hot. (or so they say)!

Sorry to hear your sad loss.   Cheers,  Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

My son in law, opened the box and 3 chicks complete with feathers were in there dead.  Obviously, poor little things died of the heat.    They are going to buy 2 new boxes made by Schwegler.   these are made of concrete and clay, and so keep the temperature ambient, they also have a 25 year guarantee !.    They will be relocated to parts of the garden which get some shade, not easy when south facing.
But at least that solves their Christmas present, as I will get them one  :D  thanks for your interest,  Mrs B

We had a pair of them who decided to make a nest in an old cast-iron drainpipe. Although we kept an eye on them they didn't survive because it was too tall for them to fly out.  :closedeyes:
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

 Good morning Mrs Bucket ::)

"Concrete and Clay" is a 1965 hit single recorded by the UK pop group Unit 4 + 2. It reached No. 1 in the UK Singles Chart in April 1965.

You will have to find somewhere substantial to hang it from!

Cheers,  Tony.
