chicken lice
« on: November 07, 2011, 20:41 »
I have a small flock of chickens, bought in 3 batches. The oldest batch have lice and I have been battling to get rid of them all summer. houses are clean, and chickens are dusted with suitable powders. yet still they are there. suggestions please!?

Have you tried Effipro spray? It's the same as Frontline. I got it from my vet. It was £17, but I'm pretty sure it will last ages.

I expect Hillfooter will be on in a minute to tell you that powder doesn't work! :(  He's right.  :) Frontline will do the job very quickly.  I know it's pricey, but worth it.  Just a spray (if you have a spray) or a few drops on the back of the neck under the feathers should do it.  Nasty little b******s  >:(

Good luck!

I agree - Frontline for Cats or Kitten. We usually wait until after dark when they have roosted, then pick each one up and put a drop or two on the back of their neck, just where they can't reach it when they preen. It clears them up really quickly.

Have a look on Amazon - I picked up Frontline spray £10 cheaper than my vets and that included p&p as well.

Don't forget NOT to eat the eggs if you use Frontline.
I think that you need to use it again after a few weeks because I think (not too sure) that the little white balls of eggs attached around their vents will not be killed off. The louse needs to take a bite of the chicken before they die. On the other hand, I might be totally wrong.

you can eat the eggs when they are being treated with frontline.
Staffies are softer than you think.

I would just check to see if any do hatch after the treatment, if by any chance they do then treat again. The dead eggs may stay stuck on the feathers for a while so only treat if they hatch  :)
