what next
« on: June 27, 2009, 21:31 »
OK so I am a complete novice, and I have cleared 1 raised bed on my allotment and have put some compost into the soil, weeded it and removed some strawberry plants (miniature ones!! so i was told) - and I dont know what I can plant or sow this time of the year, and suggestions, the things i would like to be growing are spuds carrotts, swede, tomatoes, onions, garlic, lettuce, strawberries, and also does it matter what I grow in each bed, so for example can I grow lettuce and spuds in the 1 bed.
Thanks in advance!!

You can sow swede, lettuce, spring onions, turnip, radish, to name but a few John's provided a quick guide here
I'd not worry too much about crop rotation this year, just start making notes so you know whats what next  :)

Spuds : - Bit too late
Carrots : - Should be ok
Swede : Ideal
Tomatos : Bit late - but if you can find some plants ... why not.
Onions : - Too late - try spring onions though
Garlic - too late for this year - bit early for next.
Lettuce - Ideal
Strawberries - bit late.

Beetroot is always a good bet too. Peas, French beans and runner beans at a push can all still go in. As can most salad stuff - radish etc.  You can also find some cheap plants at the garden centre that'll save you 2-3 weeks waiting for seed to germinate.

You could root some tomato side shoots, should be able to get some half decent tomatoes from them.     :nowink:
