Grow Your Own / Re: Slugs and Snails EVERYWHERE
« Last post by rowlandwells on Today at 15:04 »
I'm sure I was listening to a garden program on the TV the other day and someone said they sprayed there plants with a weak mix of chilli powder to deter slugs  I have used a mix of both Garlic and Chili powder with a dash of washing up liquid and it seemed to work on my brassicas with regular spraying of the mix and the veg tasted ok when cooked not a problem I also sprayed round the base of the plant mite be worth thinking about trying that method ?

I would still recommend one, I just thought greenjay was looking for a cheaper option..... but perhaps they are considered 'cheap' now everything has gone up in price?
They are £102 in Argos for strimmer and batteries, but you'd still need to buy a charger...

General Gardening / Re: Bulbs from seeds

I see allium seed heads amongst the Icelandic poppies.  I leave the seed heads alone and find I get self seeded alliums popping up all over the garden.

I have grown bulbs from seed though and the process is much the same for all of them.  Cyclamen are a bit more tricky and need extra stages, but the main trick to all bulb seeds is to keep the baby plants in active and healthy growth for as long as possible to bulk the bulbs up.  Wait until the seeds are dry and ripe, then cut the whole seed head and put it into a paper bag or plastic tray for the seeds to drop out.

Sow the seeds in a decent sized pot in soil based compost (John Innes) and top the pots with fine grit. The grit is important as it keeps moss and algae from taking over the surface.  Keep them outside, but somewhere a little sheltered for the first winter.  I have used a cold frame successfully but you could just rig up a couple of bricks with a sheet of glass over them.  You want to avoid sodden soil conditions.

You should get seedlings the next spring - allium seedlings do look like blades of grass so be ready for that.  Make sure you keep the pot watered and feed it as well.  Tomato food is fine while you are doing the greenhouse stuff or any liquid plant feed you have to hand.  A little and often is the best.  After the first season, you should be able to tip the pot out and find small bulbs have formed.  You can plant these out but they will not flower for an least another year.  If you want to carry on in pots and lavish care to speed things up, space those bulbs out over several pots and repeat the process.

I was going to recommend a Worx Trimmer (I've had mine 10 years now) but looked at the price, nowadays, with battery and charger
So I won't  :nowink:

Really, I bought one last year with an extra battery for £139 plus I’d already got 1 battery. Mind you I did get scammed on the same one for £69 but luckily I did get refunded by the bank

Grow Your Own / Re: Poppy advice needed

I have massive success with double tangerine poppies.
I use them as weed suppresents.
Pretty weed suppresents.
Trays seeds spread very thinly. Not sure if you cover them with soil.
The seeds are especially small so difficult to spread thinly.
Perennial.
Each head produces about 200 seeds in the second year. First year seed heads smaller.

Grow Your Own / Plum Tree Trunk Splitting
« Last post by northeastfacinggarden on Today at 11:18 »
Morning All

I am new to this site, so pleasure to meet you all!

May I ask a quick question, I have a Jubileum plum tree which I planted just over one year ago that I'm in love with.  I was checking up on it this morning and I noticed what looks like a split in the main trunk.  Does anyone know if this is this normal or if I should be worried?  See photo.  I took a quick look on google, but seems inconclusive.  This wasn't there in the winter or spring.  Its been a very wet spring here in London.

Cheers all

Grow Your Own / Storing seeds in vacuum packs
« Last post by jambop on Today at 10:30 »

Quick question about storing seeds. Has anybody tried vacuum packing their seeds for extended storage time? I have just bought a pack of bean seeds and the cost was eye watering! The thing is there are far too many seeds for even three years even though the pack says they should be good for 5 yrs I bought a pack two years ago for €14 and they have been very poor at germinating this year so I am trying to help germination rate by better storage conditions vacuum sealing seems a good idea... or is it?

What type of bird is that GB?

This is a young Blue Tit. A species similar to the USA's Chickadee and Titmice.
