Title: Plum tree in a pot
Post by: tallulah on February 28, 2011, 16:01
I have a desire for a couple of plum trees, but in pots.  Does anyone have any tips about this?  I tried once before, and the plum tree foundered in the 2nd year.  I think it was diseased as it died very very quickly - I thought I had looked after it quite well .

There have been problems with pot grown plum trees over the last couple of years.  Did it ooze guk from the stem - if so it was doomed when you bought it so nothing you did  ;)  If you can, see if you can get a tree that has been bought in this spring so the supplier has overwintered it and hopefully picked out any dodgy ones.

If you get a plum on a pixie rootstock, this should be fine for a pot.  I'd go for a decent size of pot or a half barrel and plant in John Innes no 2 soil based compost.  As long as you feed and water should be ok  :)
