need something to put seeds on in the greenhouse
« on: April 16, 2012, 16:09 »
Got a greenhouse now and need anything to rest seed trays on that can go outside latter on in the season. Any ideas and where could I get something cheap
All the way from my allotment in beautiful Derbyshire. I'm in year 3 of my allotment and wish I'd caught the bug years ago, things growing from strength to strength

Good news about your green house!

You really need staging (open slats), so that water doesn't collect underneath, and the air circulates so perhaps to start, a couple of planks - like second-hand decking, on legs each end all along one side would be better than nothing.

If you can get hold of some old concrete blocks, you could use these at each end, as the supports.

I'd expect one of the Freecycle posters would be able to help!

I know it's expensive to buy the real thing, and well worth poking around - good luck!

i've made 5 sets of staging now from pallets...cut pallet in half, cobble legs from old 2x4 or whatever, fix something across legs to stop it falling over...

the only thing I'd watch is that you don't make them too big to go through the door, as I did with my first ones

Breeze blocks and planking, quick to put up and easy to move around possibly.

Short term, how about some upside-down bread trays - the plastic ones bakeries use? They're often dumped, or sometimes shops will give you them, especially if the handles are damaged which means they're no good for stacking in the vans any more.

They're what I'm using at the moment - you could raise them on bricks if you wanted - but they serve the purpose very well as the water can just drain away, you can fit quite a lot on them and they cost nothing.

Also great for carrying your seeds/pots in and out of the greenhouse!

I've got some of them in the shed I inherited, job done. Thanks for the tip
