Two Pekin cockerels!
« on: August 12, 2011, 12:37 »
First I just want to say how much I love this forum. Everyone is soooooo helpful.
Even to idiots like me
I would just like to know if I'm being totally stupid and naive if I try and keep my 2 Penkin boys (11 week old brothers) with 3 other banty pullets, which I have yet to get, hopefully this weekend.
they are so obsessed with each other and snuggle up at night. Where one goes the other goes. Am I being overly soft, and one of them needs to go or will they settle with 3 girlies.
Please help me make a desision. A lady whom I am buying 2 of the females from will home one of them, but not both, and she said she has some Pekin pullets which he can run with, so I know he'll be ok. I just don't want to seperate them and I don't really know which of them is the better one for me to keep if one does go.
Oh dear. Why do I get myself into these situations by rescueing things  ::)
I never learn

Two cockerels to three girls is too much :(  Even one cockerel with three girls will be very trying for the girls, especially when the boys first start to feel their hormones as they can be vicious :(

I understand the 2 boys to 3 girls being too much but if 1 boy to 3 girls is trying then why do 'Trio's of chickens, 1 cockerel + 2 pullets, get sold???
surely then thats far too trying?

That's because breeding trios are normally only together for a couple of weeks, and even then saddles are often necessary.

So you put together a trio, wait until the first eggs are fertile, then you have upto a month before he eggs are not fertile again, so you can set up to three lots of 24 eggs, if your hens are laying every day.

Even for quite serious breeders; this is usually sufficient.

The cockerels either then get penned separately, or are sold on :)
