This mobile phone stuff ggrrh !
« on: November 04, 2021, 15:28 »
I have to get a mobile phone.  I have to use the app for the "Leakbot"   which I must do for my Insurance purposes.
Because I like to try and be aware, (this is the technophobe)   so I have been reading about them and becoming more confused.  Whats the best way forward.    Do I buy one without a sim card, or just go to Tesco Mobile shop and buy the cheapest monthly deal they have got going.  I did consider PAYG, but it seems it may be an expensive way to use the phone, not that I plan to use it much.
On the other hand should I simply update my Gen.3. Ipad so that I can download the app onto it.  But it won't be in my pocket when I go out.
To be quite honest it is making my feel really stressed out and making my rash come out.   Nobody can advise me, and another thing, what is the bit about Data.   The leakbot App doesn't use data it is wi-fi.
Oh brain ache.        Mrs Bouquet

I opted out of all that mobile phone stuff years ago. I have a desk-top PC and a cheap basic (£10) mobile in my car for emergencies that I've used twice in 3 years

Me too.  I wouldn't be without my laptop, it's so useful, but my phone doesn't even take pics, it just makes calls and is permanently switched off unless I want to use it myself.  That way when I go out I get uninterrupted peace and quiet!

You guys echo exactly what I do.  My little flip top Samsung mobile, never on.   Lap-top, always on.

Unfortunately, this decision has been made for me by Covea Insurance, because of my two major water leaks this year.   Hence the Leakbot fixed on to cold water mains pipe, but the app must go on an android to register what it is detecting.   Oh, thrice woe.   Mrs B

I've done a quick search it looks as though the LeakBot app is available on the Apple App store, so it may be that your iPad is a suitable option, as long as it's not too old to download it.

I suspect that the app wouldn't need to use a data allowance within the home; I'd expect it to use wi-fi or bluetooth, so you might not need a separate phone.

If you wanted a mobile phone, or needed an Android phone, you can get very basic ones fairly cheaply. The question would be whether you wanted to use it out and about as a computer (rather than phone or text). If you just wanted phone or text, then PAYG might be suitable. Otherwise, you can get a monthly tariff for perhaps £5 per month.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Sadly, the Leakbot app will not go on my ipad as it is gen.3. and just too old (like me really !)   I guess a monthly tariff for £5 seems sensible.   Where can I get that ?      A friend told me that the Data is for when you want to use your phone outside your house for some reason.
Was going to town to Vodaphone today, but it is 11.15am and still waiting for my 9am Doc's phone call.
Another question crosses my mind.   I cannot get the Daily Mail app on my ipad, again too old.  If I get a phone could I get my paper on it for free.  I currently pay £38 per month for papers.
Thanks  Mrs B

I did talk to other insurers, but they would not insure me because of the two water leaks I had this year.
Also, I have a Specialist Policy.  Other Insurers don't do this.    Without the Leakbot, I would have to pay £2500 excess for a water leak claim, but the Leakbot connection will reduce a claim excess to £1000.  Mrs B

I notice trashco mobile have the iphone se 2020 1GB data for £18/month on 3 year contract. Probably not the very cheapest but that's really not bad if you want to stay in apple ecosystem.

I have a Trasco's PAYG phone card which I got and put £10 on as requested. As long as I use it within a period of about eight weeks, even just by ringing my home phone number, it keeps it active. There's no contract with it and, as it's just for my simple Doro mobile and for emergencies etc only, it's good enough for me. I think they're the only one who does them now.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

How about keeping your mobile phone you have (that you don’t really use) and have a new iPad as you have had problems with that.
I might be wrong but the data on the phone is for if you are wanting to use the internet away from home.
As I’ve said elsewhere I pay £6 a month with gif gaff, I get unlimited minutes & texts & as of this month 1gb of data
