moss on other plants
« on: July 11, 2012, 14:03 »
Because of the high moisture we had lately a lot of moss formed on the top soil of some of my plants which grow in pots: Lavender, young apple trees, roses. Especially the apple trees suffer from mildew. Is it advisable to remove the moss, or is it better to let it as a protection layer? Or is it just depending on the weather we have and I should just adapt to that? (which is quite difficult with these extreme changes we experience!)

It's an indication of poor drainage / too much moisture.

Personally I'd remove it as it will be competing with the official plants for nutrients.  But others may have other ideas.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I'd agree with Yorkie that you should remove the moss.  It tends to take a bit of soil with it so you might need to top dress the pot with a bit extra.

A layer of fine grit on the top of the pot helps prevent moss growth.  Well unless your chickens use it as a grit feeder and pick it all off as mine do  ::)  :)

It's a problem this year, isn't it?  I've even got some starting in my greenhouse because we just haven't had the sun!  I've cut back on the watering, but I'm now wondering whether we'll ever get any chillies, cucumbers or tomatoes!!   :(
