NEW LAWN MOWER
« on: January 02, 2009, 19:38 »
i need a new lawn mower.  Mr Goose is buying me one for my birthday (who said romance is dead....but that is what i want).

i have a large garden, the back garden is on a slope and it is mostly me that does the mowing so i cant have anything too heavy.

i only have a basic qualcast one at the moment that doesnt cut or pick up well (especially on the damp areas) and want something more robust.  i dont mind if it is electric or petrol.....any suggestions?????? thanks x

I'd go for one of those small Honda mowers. I think it's called an Izzy or something like that, or get another make with a genuine Honda engine.
Lightweight, and easy to start, picks up the grass, or you can leave the box off if you can't be bothered to empty the grassbox.
A friend of mine has had one for ages, he's not killed it yet! :D

I would have a honda.A good dealer will come and demonstrate it for you.I use one and cut the size of tennis court in about half an hour. You can also use it to pick up leave.

thanks for the tips.  i have just been looking on the internet and they look really good. there is an 18" self propelled model that looks good enough for the job without being too hefty for around £320.  will inform mr goose, thanks.

I want to buy a cheap petrol mower to cut nothing more than my allotment paths so it needs to be max 18" width but smaller (16") would be fine. I used a 2 stroke petrol flymo but it is a b***er to start and took more time to get it going that it did to cut the grass with a strimmer....

The Izzy looked good but was too dear just for allotment paths. I have a very reliable mower at home - unfortunately it is just too wide to fit in my cycle trailer for quick trips to the plot. (no car)

Can anyone suggest a really cheap, small model that would be reliable?
I know I want the earth for a low price but... any tips would be welcomed.  :)

I have a battery strimmer. You could go a car boot sale but make shore that you get the seller to show you how to start it.

Thanks Celery... I have a petrol strimmer but it can take an age to cut round 1 and a half plots when time is short. I found a mower so much faster - trouble is the old one has all but packed up!  :(

hello learner,
I've found the briggs and strattoned "challenge" mowers you can buy from Argos, B&Q ect, are fine. about "100-ish for one you push yourself.
There are sometimes discounts ect (ie 10%off for O_A_P's at B&Q)
you wn't get a new one much cheaper..... :)

Brilliant Gwiz!!  :)  :)  :)  You're a star!!

Many thanks for your advice... I have had my eye on those but wondered if they would be worth getting as they are so cheap by comparison with others. All I need is something that will last a few seasons.

I've not quite reached the OAP discount stage yet but I am looking forward to it.... more time to spend doing things that are important.

Wheeling out on a Wednesday had crossed my mind.... My Dad would be delighted at the prospect of saving a few quid (for anyone) but I'm not so sure he'd be up to belting down to B&Q at 94 yrs old.

I'm definitely going to give it some thought though....  ;)  ;)

Thanks again!  :)
