Is there a time in the year when carrots don't get attacked by the dreaded fly? The reason I ask is that I would like to use the mesh covering to protect winter cabbage and sprouts from being attacked by pigeons.

There are usually two, sometimes three, generations of carrot fly in a year. The first and worst attack occurs mid-May and mid-June; subsequent attacks are in Autumn and in Winter in mild seasons.

So, you pays your money.....

Personally I leave mine on.

I have never covered my carrots before but this year one of my carrot crops got carrot fly. Will always cover them now.
