Butterfly netting
« on: August 16, 2009, 14:59 »
Does anybody on here use the heavy duty black 7mm butterfly netting to protect their brassicas? I have been using debris netting for a few years now and i know it is effective, but i  believe it forces crops also.I found the black netting being advertised in the allotment shop.Is it effective?

7mm keeps them out. The netting is square holes and because it is made of thick material it is easy to handle and get straight on frameworks. Still have to beware of leaving any gaps.

Thanks Salmo,i did not want to buy it if it was not effective,as stated debris netting is good ,but it does create a "greenhouse effect".I have sprouts ready to pick, which were not planted out until mid April,no frost no taste .Who wants sprouts in August? not me.I will give it a try next year.

I've ordered some of the debris netting and now I'm concerned about this "greenhouse" effect. I have also got the black square netting but it was very pricey!  Would the debris stuff be good for over-wintering crops then?

I only used the term "greenhouse effect" because it appears to bring everything on early.Hundreds of members on here use it and are probably very happy with it.It would provide shelter and some warmth for winter crops, though most crops would not need that protection.

Thanks! I'll have an experiment with it. Possibly spring onions, winter lettuce and I've got some mustard seeds ?
