No worries. Thinking about it, I can't believe the snake actually got through in the first place...the mesh is about 10mm. Just very unlucky I suppose, like you say.

And if you go for a finer mesh, you'll find half a dozen sloworms,  a few frogs and a starling tangled up.

I would ring a local exotic pet shop , , pdsa ,rspca, sounds as if your grass snake died of shock,

it must 1000-1 to get a snake caught in the netting , i would think deffinately a one off

Happened to me once too with the same consequences I'm afraid, although my snake was bigger (sounds like the fisherman's one that got away!) & a golden colour. I have no idea what it was, maybe it had escaped from nearby houses.
