Title: Blackcurrant Plants
Post by: Glyn on June 02, 2009, 14:50
I have just got a blackcurrant plant from B&Q which seems to be in good health and has quite a few flowers on it, my question is if i plant it now will i still have to cut it right down or can I wait to see if I get any currants from it first?

I bought mine last year towards the end of the season it still had berries on so i put it straight in the ground and then cut it right back in the autumn.  Its doing well so far this year but not too sure that was much to do with me.

I find all the currant plants very hardy and you can probably leave it to fruit without any setbacks. Be sure to give it some compost or manure mulch to make up for the fruit this year.
