Hi guys. Just a quick one. I wanted to check that I was right in thinking that I have a blackcurrant bush. Thanks

Yep its a blackcurrant.
On a further note about blackcurrants do they seed themselves under my plants are a green carpet and they look very much like mini blackcurrat bushes :blink: if they are i would end up with thousands, last year i left the fallen berries on the ground or raked them in not thinking.

Yes they do seed themselves, I get that every year.

Never tried it, but I can't see why not. I don't know how long they'd take to mature.
I find cuttings easier.

First three are tiny but now potted on. I could open a garden centre at this rate. I have raspberry runners, strawberries, gooseberry branches that rooted and now blackcurrants :unsure:

I propagate mine by layering and they will give a small crop the following year but I usually leave them another year before picking. A self-seeded plant behind the shed has produced a few berries in this, its second year, so they do seem to be very quick to come into production.

If you start with a cutting or layering, you get a baby plant, but one which is biologically as old as the parent, so it will fruit as soon as it has grown enough to support this. If you start with seed, you start with a brand new plant.
If it a quick maturing plant like a currant, this might not be a problem, but it may be a long haul with some things.
The same is true with flowering plants. That's why cutting raised or grafted wisteria flower after a couple of years and seed raised can take 10 years or more.

Don't forget that this is a bush and will grow over the years to a big plant, not that tall but very bushy.

I just thought it would be fun to pot on. Looking at the bed today i may need a few million pots though if i wanted to do them all. ::)

I can't resist free things either, I have three gooseberry bushes growing from cuttings but I already have five on my plots!! Will have to pot them up to sell on our open day.
