I have lots of lettuce plants in tubs all round the back walls of the house which I use for continuous salad. Recently I have noticed several are sort of damping off....the lower stalk is slimy and rotten and the whole plant just drops off leaving the root.
Is this phemomenon due to bad drainage after the heavy rain or is it fungal or both?

Sounds like it could be drainage problems - or have you had any frost recently - some of my plants suffered during the recent frosts.

sometimes slug damage opens the door for all the rots to get in and before you know it, they've rotted right through :(

Its likely a mix of both poor drainage and cool weather this time of year. Those are the usual ingredients for damping off in spring, and fall. Overcrowding doesn't help either, so perhaps wider spacing might help.
