I believe you should keep it down to 2 per plant

I never stop my squash I just let them produce as many as they want, you can get 3,4,5 squash on a plant all depends on what sort of summer we get.

I agree.... let them grow  ;)

If growing trailing - Towards end of the season you could chop off any that don't look like they will mature in time to let the plant put the energy into ones that are almost there.  :)

Which type are you growing - trailing or bush?

Is it worth trying to grow ones from seed from shop bought fruit?

Just askin because I just germinated some unexpectedly!

I guess it depends where the shop bought fruit was grown. Seed sold in UK should be well suited to growing in UK weather conditions... but, if you have the space to spare, give it a go... Can't do any harm!  ;)

I managed to grow crown prince from a shop bought squash, so I don't see why not, especially if the weather is kind  :D

Must look out locally for this in the shops - fancy having a go at growing one!
Thanks for the tip.   :)

Hi fellow growers, I've been given some wilkinson Winter squash f1 seeds and wonder is it too late to sow them now or should i save them for next year?
Got a cloche tunnel if that helps or start them on the windowsill in my gardenroom(southfacing)?

Cheers

Start them off indoors ASP and they should be fine to go out in June...

Try some & save some maybe?  ;)

Cheers me dears,

I'll bang a few seeds into some pots later today and if they come they come I'm a winner, if not then the seeds were still cheaper than buying one single squash from the supermarket.

I think you'll find you still have time yet (I've only just sowed a 2nd batch this weekend  :D) - some sowing instructions say sow outdoors from about mid-May.  Late sowing soon catch up with earlier sowings and are less traumatic trying to harden them off (once any trailing squash plant starts to grow, you risk damaging it every time you move it because it gets too long to handle)

I think a butternut crop size depends on where you are in relation to latitude (how late or early you get a frost) and a good warm summer.  In the south you are more likely to get a better harvest compared to further up north but realistically everyone should still get at least 1-2 decent sized fruit per plant (and all the others are a great bonus  ;))
Failure is only a temporary change in direction to set you straight for your next success.
Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly.
