I read in a book you can sow beetroot in august - am i too later to satrt some off in the greenhouse and plant out in a few weeks ?

You don't say where you are, but it's a long past from August, betroot can get very manky in winter, I'd personally would leave it now, for most parts of UK , unless you have some protection for them.
