Just a quick question before i get started with todays gardening jobs: Just got a beautiful clematis plant but the only bit of trellis i have to support it is behind a rose bush, can i plant it next to the rose?

I am willing to stand corrected  but my OH s mum had a lovely rambling rose and clematis growing together it used to looked gorgeous this time of the year

yes, a marriage made in heaven but get the varieties to compliment each other and for the specific direction, size etc and that flower together so that you have two colours happening

Or have a viticella (late flowering variety) that will provide colour when the first flush of rose flowers are over.
They are easier to prune as well cos you just chop all the top growth off in early spring, before growth starts
