Tomatoes going from green to brown...
« on: August 17, 2009, 14:17 »
Hi all,

New to allotmenting, so I can't remember what type of tomatoes we planted ( they came in a big job lot of random seed packets), but they have taken ages to set fruit. We now have a fair few smallish, green tomatoes, but a number of them are going brown in streaks! Apart from the brown bits, the rest of the tomato is green, so they are not over ripe or anything like that. The leaves look ok, it is just the toms which seem wierd.

Any ideas what this might be? I will try to get down there this week with a camera, if necessary!

I don't think it was an unusual variety, as I recall the picture on the packet was of normal looking red toms.

Thanks for that link! It looks most like a mosaic virus to me - grrr!  At least it isn't blight.

Anyone know how to deal with it? Can I save some of the crop? Will the fruits be safe to eat if any of them ripen? How can I prevent it in future? Sorry for all the questions, feeling a little overwhelmed by it all!

Will try to get down to the lottie soon and take some photos for confirmation.

Been down the plot today after 6 days away, expecting the worst.

Mine are still standing!! Made a real effort this year after the losses of the last two years to keep the Dithane treatment up.

One of the other chaps I spoke to a week ago, who thought Dithane was too expensive was throwing his in the skip.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Damn, turned out it WAS blight, just looked like a mosaic virus at first. Oh well, got 2 little red ones un-blighted and a handful of little green ones which I will try to ripen on the window sill.... Might not bother in future, one of the old boys on the site was grumbling that another plot holder only ever grows toms and spreads disease all over the site.

I was really looking forward to tomatoes that tasted of something too :(

Blight is air born and he would catch it that way, as well as others on the site. It's a bit unfair to blame him for growing tomatoes.

See this thread.......

I'm the only one on our site with tomatoes standing, now.
