The Carrot experiment
« on: April 24, 2009, 15:25 »
Having attempted to grow carrots for several years now, I have never enjoyed that much success. They never seem to get very long.

For the past couple of years I have been the proud owner of some old organ tube casing that I have cut up and use as containers to grow carrots in. They approximately measure 8"X8"X18".

I fill them with a mixture of compost, sand and grit.

My plan for this year has been to sink an 8" length of 32mm pipe down a corner of each container. I intend to use this pipe to water them and hence direct the water and consequently roots further down the container.

Has anybody had success with a similar method?

Cheers.

I know the show pro's grow them in blue barrels, so I see no reason why organ pipes wont have the same result if the growing media mix is right.
You'll have to keep us all posted  :)

Will do. Not quite sure what the ratios are. I just mixed it all together and hoped for the best really!

Mmmm - square carrots. At least they won't roll off the chopping board! :tongue2:
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I am using 8 inch drainpipes cut about 10 inches and filled with compost with some fine soil mixed in, sowing between 5 and 7 carrots in each one on a weekly basis. No sign of any seedlings yet but it's only two weeks into the trial. The pipes are stood on my raised bed soil.

The reason for doing this for me, is to stop me having to thin out and introduce carrot root fly.

I love this!

And it shows what a fantastic forum this is for such a mix of people. There the techies, the newbies, the oldies, the imaginative, the experimental, the set in their ways, the worried, the laid back, the chemical users, the organics, chookie people and veggy people and sometimes both!

Its great here!
