egg bound?
« on: February 12, 2014, 11:15 »
Chocky might be - a bit worried.  The last to lay despite being two months older and she wanders off looking for dark places to rest.  I've put her in the nest box a few times but no egg.  Today she walks slowly when the others scamper along and I'm worried.

She's had a bath but not for long enough perhaps and loves the drying process.

How can I know if egg bound - should I be able to feel it?  Can't feel any difference between her and other's bodies...     Shoud I give her any cod-liver oil or anything?
One grandma and 4 baby Pekins.

Just back form the vet.  There is indeed an egg in there so a calcium shot and wait 24 hours.  Lucky to have a vet who knows his hens. Fingers crossed

when bathing her keep her in the warm water for 30 - 60 minutes (keep topping up with warm water).
Staffies are softer than you think.

I had this problem a few weeks ago nerdle

put some vasoline round her vent  and give her a little olive oil in food

if you feel round her abdomen it will feel hard - be carefull not to break it - keep her quite and warm , maybe try keeping her in the coup out of the wind and rain

hopefully she will pass it her self with a lttle TLC

Well - another long warm bath - can feel an egg this time (its huge).. all I can do is wait and its agony for both of us as I couldn't bear to lose her.

She wanders around my living room and I just point the fan heater at her - dry soon I hope.

HUGE relief - an egg :) :) :)
Was keeping her in and she went behind a full length curtain (I put a towel in there for her) to lay it.  Thought I'd better give her some space and left her alone.  Then she finally emerged leaving behind a cold egg so she must have hung around in there for a while after laying.

It was a normal egg size - not smaller banty one - not an easy first egg I guess but could see no blood.

Can''t tell you how relieved I am.  She'll be put on the nest box next time though.....  I'm not cut out for this sort of thing - couldn't be a farmer !!!!!

Thank you for your kind comments. xxx

so pleased she has now passed this egg - I'm not surprised she had to have a rest afterwards  :)
