Please inspire me with squashes!
« on: January 17, 2009, 12:46 »
I've got a very bare bit of fence up which I used to grow raspberries.

<a href="http://s405.photobucket.com/albums/pp139/themoog/?action=view&current=IMG_0156.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i405.photobucket.com/albums/pp139/themoog/IMG_0156.jpg" border="0" alt="fence"></a>

(first time trying to upload a photo - hope this works)

Unfortunately they took over, despite my best efforts and had to come out (luckily we've a very good fruit farm down the road  :D ). I'd like to grow something which could be replenished each year, rather than a permanant plant and I was wondering about climbing squashes.

Renewing and adding more/stronger wires wouldn't be a problem, all I need is some inspiration for something which would grow in a small spot like this and which tastes fab. The root area would be heavily shaded by the raised beds, but it's a lovely sunny spot with a little shade from crops in the bed.

Any ideas gratefully received   !
My music teacher was right. If you have to make a mistake, make it good and big and loud; with a bit of luck people will think that it was always meant to be like that.

What about runner or climbing beans?

I've tried to grow cucumbers up rather than along for 2 years now and they won't have it.  I guess other squash-type plants might be better behaved.

There was a similar question asked on this thread.
I have a spot much like yours and will be trying to train some butternut squash (Sprinter) up some trellis leaning against the fence.

Thanks for the link Chuffy  :D .

Greenowl - I grow my runner beans on my very small bit of allotment, but grow my climbing beans and peas in the raised beds so that they leave some nitrogen behind. Although I hadn't through of branching out into something more exotic in the bean world  :o ...

(off to hunt through my catalogues  :D )

I managed to get my butternut to grow "up" about 3ft but it took a lot of tying in (had a good crop though, about 16 from 6x3ft plot)
What about a Kiwi fruit?  or a heritage pea (one of the tall ones)?
