Patio Vegetables
« on: January 11, 2011, 17:39 »
Hi Guys  :)... it's been a long time since I came to visit !! Hope you are all keeping well!

I am seeking suggestions for best small veg to grow in pots, growbags, or similar, on a very small patio.

As space is at a premium, taste is an absolute MUST!  :D

Hi flowerlady, welcome back!

Have a look at this recent thread, a lot of good advice in there:

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Come and cut again salad leaves are great in troughs.

Have also grown good mangetout and peas in containers, and you can't beat those for taste.

Another good experimental one is sweet potatoes in grow bags. The foliage is lovely too.

I also have to make best use of space in small back garden.  Last 3 years have tried almost everything in pots, but have concluded only the following is worth it (also bear in mind my location and that parts of my garden are heavily shaded):

salad cut & come again
herbs (rosemary, thyme, lemon thyme, sage, parsley, chives, coriander, mint etc etc)
carrots (in big recycling bins)
spinach (if you can water very regularly)
potatoes
hanging basket variety of tomatoes (tall pots, or pots lifted off ground)
spring onions
strawberries

Ive tried courgettes, upright toms, squash, peas, BBs etc but just not worth it imo.

I agree with looking at John's book, also ignore the hype from different seed catalogues about their newest so-tasty variety. Try french beans, carrots, a runner bean, salad stuff, mini-veg such as leeks, a calabrese or two, but ask on here about it for worth doing and also taste, as that is what I primarily grow my veg for.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

thanks for all your comments ... all very helpful   :)

I have to say that it is TASTE that made me put up this post!!  No point giving up valuable space on small patio for something that does not taste any good !!

... so any NAMED variety of small / mini veg would be appreciated !!

I grew a mini tomato last year - think it was Tom Thumb - came free with a magazine.  It was prolific, and delicious, and great value for space saving produce too.  :)
