Cheers.  Seems like a good forum, lots of replies.  Only been to plot twice up to now but me & my lass are going at weekend to get some weeding done.

Certainly seems the time for it.
I was lucky with our new 40x50 foot plot... at least 2/3 was already clear to some degree so we can get started with the "fun" stuff straight away.
Good luck to us all methinks.

Hello everyone
My name's Jan and i've just taken over a dog boarding kennel that has
space for me to nick a bit of the field and make an allottment of my very own!!  I have already fenced off a bit for some chickens and now have 5 ex-battery hens and Bryan the cockerel!  I'm trying to work out how big to make it to start with (I could always change it later if too big/small)
what do you suggest?  All suggestions gratefully received  :D

sounds like ya have a lump spare ground so what ever you have fenced off if its suits you it suits them , the bigger it is the more they will roam mine are in 50ft by 50ft  in 7 pens 200 birds approx . so from what you have . let em have what ya wants .  and remember when they have worn out a patch you can move em onto a fresh peice if you want . but id let em roam at will.. but not on the plot tho
still alive /............

Welcome Jan,
Compost the dog doos for 18 months, turn your waste into a valuable resource!

Don't take on more than you can cope with either - new place means you are going to be busy so keep it down to what is comfortable.

Newbie - manure!!! & growing from seed
Thanks for the advice on size.  How long does it take for chicken and horse manure to rot down?  Can I dig it straight in as I dig plot over, or should it rot down first?  Also, will wood shavings rot down ok?
There is so much I don't know  :?
Also, I will be getting a greenhouse of some sort soon, so are there any veggies you wouldn't reccommend trying to grow from seed?
Thanks
Jan
