hi there - ive had loads of helpful info from all of you so far and now id like to hnow has anyone got any experience with steaming the inside of their hen houses with one of those small carpet steamers?- someone told me it works as the steam heat penetrates little crevices in the wood, i'd like to try it but concerned it might warp the wood? although it apparently dries very quickly. Anybody tried this or know if mite can withstandbeing 'scorched' ? !!

I've never tried it but it sounds a brilliant idea.... at worst you could just end up with very clean steamed mite 

Warping wood.... try it out on a similar piece of wood before-hand giving it a heft blast. If that has no bad out-comes you could give it a go..

I agree with Learner.

I used a long acting cat anti-flea spray in my hen house. The sort you spray on carpets and furniture. I got it from the vet.

I attacked the coop with the steam cleaner followed by the pressure washer and a good jeyes fluiding , still didn`t get `em all they are tough little beasties.
I think slapping plenty of cheap emulsion paint around the inside to fill the cracks got as many as the cleaning.
