Alpine Strawberries??
« on: May 21, 2008, 22:59 »
When I was up in Scotland, I bought some mini growing kits from Focus.  One had among other things alpine strawberry seeds in it.  these are growing well and although tiny, I transplanted them and got 2 seed trays full of little plants, but when do I plant them out?  and where is the best place for them?

My SIL has hers in her long border and they do well, but my only border is full of other stuff.

Any advice gratefully received!

How about a hanging basket by your kitchen door?  My younger son won't eat normal strawberries but loves the tiny wild ones, but our cat used to eat them all (they'd spread all round our garden) - so I transplanted a few plants into a hanger to keep the cat off, worked a treat and very pretty too  :D
Nobody said this was going to be easy ... but some days are better than others!

Oooh thanks Peggy, that's an idea for some of them. I've got the goat's old hay racks on the back wall, and one is next to the kitchen door.  May try that, although snails got in last year and ate a lot of the plants I'dput in there, if not, I'll try a basket full.

As long as I remember to water it!!!!

Copper tape (if you can find a way to fix it round your hay rack) and water retaining gel ... sorted

Mine are all over the garden, literally!! They don't crop much though and I reckon keeping them less crowded and fed a bit, would be better for them.
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".
