Ragdoll cat?
« on: February 10, 2011, 22:24 »
So a friend of a friend has a four month old rag doll kitten that was given to her by her bf, however they have since split and she is having to move and isn't allowed the cat with her so has said if she can't talk her dad into having it would I mind taking it on?!? Now I am a massive animal lover ! I have two cats of my own that are just over a year old :) does anyone know how best to introduce the new kitten to them?

A lot of people take the new cat home and keep it in one room for a few days so the other cats can get used to the new scent and prescence of a stranger. You can try swapping bedding or rubbing the cats with a cloth with the others  scent on it. When you do let her out, do it for short supervised periods and expect hissing and squabbling. Make sure the cats can always get away from each other rather than trapping them in one room. As yours are young and socialised to each other you might find they are more willing to accept a playmate. The ragdoll may not be if she is not used to other cats.

I have a Ragdoll he is a 4yo nuet male and honestly the most amazing cat ever.  He converts non-cat lovers to cat lovers, people that prefer dogs over cats to people that prefer cats over dogs.  He is very daft and also completly non-confrontational when it comes to meeting strange cats.  You would think this is a good thing but it means that if another cat/animal laid into him he would probably roll up into a ball and give up!

Because of this he is kept as a house cat, that and the fact he is so stupidly friendly that someone would probably walk off with him! He does go out for half a day in the summer/ better weather at weekends when we are around.

I'd suggest keeping the kitten in a seperate room, make sure he knows where the hidy-holes are etc to escape from the others if needed. Then I'd gradually let your cats say hello, through a wire mesh if possible.  If you have one cat that is the non-dominant one start with that one.    If you intend to let him out I wouldn't do so for a good few months.

Just be ready for sparks as cat meetings always take time!

I wish my Domino had a bit of ragdoll in her at times (i.e. when visiting the vet!) she is the olny cat i know that turns into a raving loony/screaming banshee/claw-o-matic psychopath when scruffed.

You just can't pick her up in any way shap or form without risking life, limbs and eyes... still she gives fantastic head bonks (when she wants to)

Having two ragdoll rescues from the cpl and several other cats I agree with the previous advice wholly. Scent exchange is invaluable, leave it at least a week before they meet, keeping kitten in another room and swapping bedding. Ragdolls are the most perfectly chilled out and un fazed cats, they are lazy and you have to watch their weight! Like real life Teddy bears I also agree that even folks that don't like cats love them! Good luck and take your time!

Just googled them as I had never heard of them before.  They are so beautiful and I am not a cat person.

Lovely.  Do they need to be brushed?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
