Storing apples and pears
« on: February 17, 2011, 19:58 »
Have thought if i make a start now, when i go to the local supermarket, i could collect empty apple storage boxes along with the cardboard bits which hold fruit individually, and then i will be sorted for when my apples and pears are ready to be sorted.   :D

(Spose loads of you already do this, but i have struggled for a couple of years with this and its time consuming wrapping fruit in paper individually, and then I had the light bulb experience  ::) )

That is, unless you peeps have a better suggestion?

mta, just read a previous thread from back in November (wheres the embarrased smiley?)

Be a first rate version of yourself, not a second rate version of someone else.

That sounds like a good plan  :D

The only thing you'll need to bear in mind once you come to store them is to ensure that air can circulate between the layers
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

our apple tree grows 1lb apples that get wooly after about 2 weeks, fortunately they are also good cookers, so they get sliced bagged and frozen quite quickly in 1lb bags, then when we want cooked apples a bag or two gets pulled out, put in a dish in the oven, result instant pie / crumble filling or just stewed apple with custard.
No special preparation, just cut up bagged and frozen. (on a good year we can fill a freezer, with enough for a year)

we do the impossible daily, miracles take a little longer.

Good suggestion Grendel  :D

Pity I don't have a bigger freezer  :(  (you can never have too much freezer space!)
