Chinese Cabbage
« on: November 18, 2021, 13:03 »
A few Chinese cabbage questions if you don't mind.
I sprayed mine about two weeks ago as they were starting to look like lace on the outside. Yesterday I found they were absolutely full of caterpillars. Do I keep on spraying?

Frost is imminent in this part of the world. How frost-resistant are they?

Can the cabbages be frozen?

I've been trying for some time to grow Chinese cabbage Anton  ours got the dreaded caterpillars on them so I gave the plants to the compost bin and gave up as a bad job but depending on the damage I suppose you could give them a second chance after spraying to get rid of the caterpillars I'm not sure how frost resistant they are outdoors because ours where in the poly tunnel

anyway i must say you did well to get them to that stage because nearly all ours run to seed and what didn't the caterpillars had a feat on it was the caterpillars last supper as I sprayed the plants before putting them in the compost bin :D

but we will have another go with Chinese cabbage next year with another variety and see what happens

Thanks Rowlandwells.
Last year I did really well with the plants but I put them in a lot earlier, so they even started regrowing after I had cut out the centre rather than taking out the whole cabbage.
I started them off in pots  but planting was delayed this year because of the biblical downpours.

They aren't frost hardy and they don't freeze.  My CC and pakchoi are under a layer of fleece to keep them a bit warmer, but if we get a hard frost they are all going to be history.   :(
